The 4+1 Pillars of Emergency Preparedness

Based on frameworks analyzed from FEMA, Sphere, UN Clusters, and the Rule of Threes. The first four are non-negotiable survival requirements. The fifth (Communication) is a critical enabler - you can survive without a radio, but not without water.

The 4 Core Survival Pillars

These are absolute requirements for survival. Without any one of these, death is inevitable.

Pillar 1

Physical Safety & Security

The foundation of all other efforts.

Avoid: Injury, Death, Violence
Pillar 2

WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene)

Water is life. Sanitation prevents death.

Avoid: Dehydration, Cholera, Dysentery
Pillar 3

Shelter & Settlement

Protection from the elements enables everything else.

Avoid: Hypothermia, Heatstroke, Exhaustion
Pillar 4

Health & Sustenance

Medical care and calories sustain life.

Avoid: Infection, Starvation, Chronic Condition Failure

+1 Critical Enabler

Not required for survival, but dramatically improves outcomes for individuals and communities.

Enabler Pillar

Communication & Coordination

The enabler that amplifies all other efforts.

Not required for survival
Summary: The Pillars at a Glance
PillarKey ConceptDanger to Avoid
1. SafetyThe foundation of all other efforts.Injury, Death, Violence
2. WASHWater is life. Sanitation prevents death.Dehydration, Cholera, Dysentery

4. HealthMedical care and calories sustain life.Infection, Starvation, Chronic Condition Failure
5. CommsThe enabler that amplifies all other efforts.Isolation, Misinformation, Delayed Response

Remember: The first 4 pillars are survival requirements - without them, you will die. Communication is a force multiplier that improves outcomes but is not essential for individual survival. You can survive without a radio; you cannot survive without water.
