Videos show that unrest has spread to more than 50 towns and cities, including pro-government heartlands.
Verified video analysis by BBC Verify and BBC Persian shows anti-government protests in at least 17 of Iran's 31 provinces since 28 December, spreading to more than 50 towns and cities after a sharp currency devaluation. Demonstrations, some in traditionally pro-regime cities (Qom, Mashhad), include anti-regime chants and attacks on government symbols. Security forces have increasingly used lethal force after Supreme Leader Khamenei's public remarks; human rights groups report dozens killed (BBC Persian confirmed at least 11 identities; HRANA reports ~35 fatalities). Notable violent incidents occurred in Malekshahi (Ilam), Ilam city, Fasa (Fars), Azna, and Iranshahr. Authorities (judiciary chief, IRGC) have signalled both listening to economic grievances and intent to crack down on 'rioters'. Experts say protests are widespread but have not yet produced defections in security forces or a coherent plan to topple the regime; risk of escalation remains.
