Tehran, Tehran Province, Iran
More than 500 people have been killed during anti-government protests, a US-based human rights group says.
BBC reports that massive anti-government protests in Iran, beginning 28 December over economic issues, have spread nationwide (reported in 186 cities across all 31 provinces). Human rights groups (HRANA, IHRNGO, Hengaw, Kurdistan HR Network) say nearly 500 protesters and 48 security personnel have been killed in two weeks, with at least 10,600 arrests. Named victims include coach/referee Amir Mohammad Koohkan (26), allegedly shot on 3 Jan in Neyriz, and student Rubina/Roubina Aminian (23), reportedly shot during a Tehran protest. Medical staff describe hospitals overwhelmed and footage shows numerous bodies; BBC notes limits on verification because international outlets cannot report from inside Iran and there has been a national internet shutdown. Iranian leadership calls protesters "troublemakers"; the US president has publicly threatened possible military options. The situation is described as a severe government crackdown and widespread civil unrest.
