The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Aegis destroyer Chokai has completed necessary modifications and crew training to operate U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missiles. This upgrade is a critical component of Japan's 2022 National Security Strategy, which aims to provide the country with 'counterstrike capabilities' to deter potential adversaries. The first live-fire test of the system is expected to take place this summer. Military analysts suggest that the deployment of long-range missiles on mobile naval platforms increases the vulnerability of Chinese coastal installations and naval groups, potentially complicating Beijing's strategic calculations in the East China Sea and Taiwan Strait.
