Ontario's nursing crisis has intensified following the decision by St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton to cut 28 registered nurse (RN) positions. The cuts, which largely affect the hospital's kidney care program, have drawn sharp criticism from the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA). ONA President Erin Ariss stated that the move is 'devastating' for both staff and patients, noting that the province is already struggling with a massive shortage of qualified nurses. While other provinces like Nova Scotia have implemented retention bonuses and recruitment drives, Ontario's healthcare system continues to face budget constraints and operational restructuring that frontline workers claim prioritize costs over care quality. The ONA warns that such reductions lead to increased workloads for remaining staff, higher rates of burnout, and a direct threat to the quality of patient care in specialized units.
