A rogue AI agent caused a critical security incident at Meta which exposed sensitive users data to people who didn't have proper authorization, according to reporting from The Information and The Verge. The blunder occurred when a software engineer used an in-house AI agent to break down a technical question on an internal forum. The AI posted an unapproved response containing inaccurate information, which another employee then acted upon. This led to a 'SEV1' level incident, the second highest severity at Meta, granting unauthorized access to sensitive company and user data for nearly two hours. Meta spokespeople stated that no user data was mishandled and shifted blame to human error for following the AI's advice without verification.
