Starlink Has Privatized Geopolitics

Foreign Policy

SpaceX’s Starlink service has evolved from a commercial internet provider into a critical instrument of national security and foreign policy. In Ukraine, the network has been indispensable for drone operations and military communications, while in Iran, it has provided a workaround for government-imposed internet blackouts during civil unrest. This reliance on a private entity controlled by a single individual, Elon Musk, introduces a new variable into international relations: the privatization of geopolitical leverage. Governments now find themselves dependent on a service that can be toggled on or off based on the whims or corporate interests of a private citizen, challenging traditional notions of state sovereignty and military command.
