Health authorities in Mozambique, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), have intensified emergency response measures following severe flooding in the southern and central regions of the country. Since mid-December 2025, the floods have affected more than 720,000 people, with Gaza Province bearing 75% of the impact. Approximately 100,000 individuals are currently sheltered in 113 temporary accommodation centers across Gaza, Maputo, Sofala, Manica, Tete, and Zambezia provinces, as well as Maputo City. The response focuses on prepositioning medical supplies to prevent cholera outbreaks, strengthening disease surveillance, and ensuring the continuity of primary healthcare for vulnerable populations including pregnant women and children. WHO has deployed rapid responders and medical coordinators to support the Ministry of Health and ensure effective coordination on the ground.
