Mandera, Kenya
Kenya is grappling with its worst dryness in 45 years following a severely deficient short rainy season from October to December 2025. National data indicates that 10 counties are currently in drought conditions, with Mandera at a critical 'alarm' phase. Over 2.1 million people are experiencing crisis-level food insecurity, a number that could rise to 3.5 million if interventions stall. The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) reported that rainfall was only 30 to 60 percent of the long-term average. The crisis has triggered significant food inflation for staples like maize flour and rice, while water scarcity has increased the risk of cholera and typhoid. The Kenyan government has allocated Sh6 billion for emergency response, focusing on food aid, cash transfers, and medical supplies, with an additional Sh4 billion planned monthly. International organizations like the WHO are providing support through emergency supplies and risk assessment tools.
