Aomori, Japan

Two weeks of heavy snowfall along the Sea of Japan coast and a recent temperature rise have created life‑threatening conditions across northern Japan. Authorities reported at least 35 deaths and 393 injuries after extreme snowfall that buried homes, collapsed rooftops and caused falls and sudden illnesses while people cleared snow. Niigata prefecture recorded 12 fatalities, Akita six and Aomori four; Aomori city recorded snow depths up to 183cm (175cm by Tuesday). Officials warned of increased avalanche risk as snowmelt followed warmer days. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency attributed the deaths to the extreme winter conditions. The Japanese government ordered troops to deploy to affected areas to assist with relief and snow removal. Officials additionally warned of power-outage risks, falling snow from roofs and disruptions to transport. Severe weather is complicating preparations for a snap national election scheduled for Feb. 8, with concerns that turnout in rural, snowbound regions could be depressed. Forecasts call for further snow showers in northern and western districts in the coming days.
