Jan 26 (Reuters) - Russian drones and missile strikes on Monday hit Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, knocking out power to 80% of the city and surrounding region and striking apartment buildings, a school and a kindergarten, local officials said. Two people were injured, Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said in a video posted on Telegram. Syniehubov said the energy system came under attack with serious damage and repair crews were working, but further air raids were complicating efforts. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said an "energy site" had been targeted and a city school was badly damaged as night-time temperatures fell to -14C. Unofficial Telegram channels showed the city plunged into darkness and photos showed interior damage to buildings. Separately, in Kryvyi Rih, Russian drones hit a high-rise apartment building, triggering a fire; residents were evacuated, the local military administration head Oleksandr Vilkul said. Reuters could not independently verify the reports and there was no immediate reaction from Russian officials. Kyiv has also been hit by massive air attacks since the New Year, knocking out power and heating to hundreds of buildings.
