Mt Etna, 95012 Castiglione di Sicilia, Metropolitan city of Catania, Italy

Mount Etna has entered a new phase of volcanic activity, with a lava outflow observed inside the Valle del Bove. According to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), activity began on the afternoon of 1 January 2026 when a fissure at about 2,000–2,100 metres released lava. The flow moved slowly toward the lower parts of the valley, reaching around 1,500 metres above sea level and following the natural course of the Valle del Bove, which limits the spread of the phenomenon. Videos circulating on social media show steady lava movement within the basin without exceeding its boundaries. Authorities say no residential areas are currently threatened, and no damage or infrastructure problems have been reported. Scientific teams remain on alert and are monitoring the activity.
